Don't be frightened... I think people just make a big deal about it so less people can knit wonderful footwear. I am a new sock knitter myself (just started my third pair) and I found the heel turn simple and enjoyable - just follow the pattern. I find that I need a quiet space to knit this portion of the sock, because I become easily distracted and lose count.
Have fun with it... you can always frog that section if you make a mistake.
You can do it girl! Once you get the hang of it, it is super cool. Just pay attention and you may not want to turn the heel the first time at SnB, because you don't want to be talking and lose your place.
